For this customer, we had to explain an important concept. Even if your attic has insulation, that doesn't mean that it's efficient. If you've never had air sealing done, then your insulation alone isn't really stopping any air leakage. As time goes on, and air filters through, that old insulation is going to continue to lose its efficiency. What we did for this homeowner was take out the old insulation, air seal the attic, and install our cellulose insulation. Now, this customer can say that they have a healthier, more comfortable and more energy efficient home.
This client's garage knee wall area is connected to an up-stairs bedroom. The problem with that is the garage knee wall isn't insulated, meaning that air from the garage is constantly leaking in and out of that room (making it very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter). Our solution for this was to install 1/2" of polysio foam board and spray foam sealant. That upstairs room actually feels like a livable space now.
Have you ever noticed how your upstairs is sweltering hot in the summer and your downstairs is bone-chilling cold in the winter? If your answer is yes, then you and this customer are right in the same boat. The problem? An unsealed and under-insulated attic. We needed to air seal the attic area (any penetrations, open cavities, rims & joists, etc) and blow in closed cell cellulose insulation. We fixed this customer's uncomfortable home and we can fix yours too!
This homeowner had some ridiculously high electric bills for a house the size of his. He had CHS come out and find out how to fix this problem of his.
What we found was that he had an exposed knee wall that was causing a lot of air leakage and, consequently, pushing those electric bills up. We solved this problem by air sealing the knee wall with our closed cell spray foam. This has made a huge difference for the customer and they no longer have to worry about their electricity bills hiking up during the summer and winter.
This homeowner had a real concern about his bedroom's comfort. The temperature would get really extreme during the winter and summer months. He suspected that there wasn't any insulation in his bedroom walls and very little in his attic. He called CHS to come out and diagnose his house.
We found that the homeowner was correct -- he definitely needed insulation in his attic and walls, but he also needed air sealing in the attic. We were able to do all of this for him (and a quality job of it at that). We successfully resolved his comfort issues and lowered his utility bills at the same time!
