This client had an attic with no air sealing and insufficient insulation. That is a bad combination that can lead to tons of air leakage and discomfort in the home. What can we do to fix this? Well, our crew started by air sealing the attic. This means that we closed up any openings or exposures in the attic floor with caulk and also applied polysio foam board to the attic walls. Now that we've created an airtight barrier, our next step is to install new, durable insulation. We chose to blow in closed-cell cellulose insulation. By making these improvements, we have given our client the control to be comfortable in his home!
This homeowner was not happy with the way that her house couldn't seem to maintain a consistent temperature. In summer the upstairs became very hot and in winter the downstairs became very cold. She had our home comfort specialist come out to recommend some solutions for her house.
We recommended that she treat her attic to form a thermal barrier. We did this by caulking along any cavities that would allow for air leakage in the attic, air sealing the attic hatch, installing insulation baffles, and blowing in closed-cell cellulose insulation. This customer now has a comfortable home that she can be happy with all year round.
This client had just purchased his house and noticed pretty immediately that the previous owner had left the crawl space a mess. There was trash and insulation falling all over the place and the floor was covered in mildew. Remember, you typically share about 40-60% of the air you breathe with your crawl space. Looking at the picture featured on the left, I would be a little worried about that (and so would this new homeowner). He called CHS to give him some advice on fixing up this problem.
Of course we started off by removing the trash, but we also performed an encapsulation for the crawl space. This involved us installing a 20 mil vapor barriers, insulating the walls with 2" of closed cell spray foam, installing a Crawl-o-sphere for additional ventilation and creating an EverLast access door. Together, these upgrades have formed the crawl space you see on the right, which means much healthier air for this homeowner along with cheaper utility bills.
Chantal had lived in her Upper Marlboro, MD home before calling Complete Home Solutions. She had noticed regardless of the downstairs house temperature the upstairs remain much warmer in the summer and much colder in the summer. She had initially called Complete Home Solutions for an estimate on an HVAC replacement, but upon further review from one of our trained Home Comfort Specialist, the HVAC system was not the problem. The comfort problems were directly related to the condition of the attic of the home. Following the recommendation to properly air seal her attic as well as supply it with the proper amount of insulation. On the day of the installation our Home Comfort Technicians air sealed the attic using fire block spray foam, this process keeps conditioned air in the home without it leaking out of any seams, top plates or recessed lights. The next step was to blow in 16 inches of new cellulose insulation to provide an adequate barrier between the attic temperatures and the air you pay to keep comfortable in your home. Chantal noticed an immediate difference and can now sleep comfortably regardless of the temperature outside.

Sometimes it's just a matter of making sure the job is done right! Aisha called Complete Home Solutions a year after having another company "fix her attic insulation problems", but after a year she was still experiencing similar comfort issues. Upon an examination from one of our trained Home Comfort Specialists, it was determined that several key areas were missed when air sealing the attic, as well as the insulation level falling 6in short of the current standards. Luckily for Aisha we don't cut corners and were able to fix these issues and set her and her home up for success. she noticed a difference immediately and is resting comfortably.
