Insulating a Three Season Room in Jewett City, CT

This homeowner in Jewett City, CT called us hoping to get his three season room insulated. Some homes or additions are designed with floors that have the outside air under them. Other times a home or addition was originally used as a summer home or “three season room”, and was converted to all season heated space later. When the outside air flows under a floor it feels very cold and uncomfortable in the winter - especially with ceramic tile, linoleum or laminate floors. Since the floor is the surface of the room we are in contact with most, it’s very important to fix, in order to be comfortable. There are two issues - air leakage through the floor, and conductive heat loss through the floor, because heat moves from more to less through solid materials. Even if there is fiberglass batt insulation in the floor, because it sags down away from the sub floor, the same outside air gets over it (“thermal bypass”) rendering it useless. Mold on the floor joists and sub floor is also a concern. Results - cold floors, drafts, uncomfortable rooms, greater overall home air leakage rate, higher fuel and electric bills.

We had the perfect solution for this customer. In this solution, SilverGlo™ foam insulation board is installed across the bottom of the floor joists with special long screws and 3” washers, SilverGlo™ is expanded polystyrene foam with graphite infused into the foam, which bumps up the insulation (“R”) value by 24% over standard EPS foam. Further, SilverGlo™ has a radiant barrier to reflect heat, so the insulation isn’t doing all the work by itself. All seams are sealed. If necessary a skirt board can be installed around the perimeter of the insulation so the edge is not visible. The skirt board may require painting after we are complete. Result - Much warmer floors, less drafts and more comfortable rooms, quieter home, lower fuel and electric bills.

Insulating an Attic in Stonington, CT

This homeowner in Stonington, CT called us with concerns about his attic insulation. He believed the insulation in his home was water damaged. When our Home Comfort Specialist arrived, he noted that the attic insulation was blown-in fiberglass. The home was almost 50 years old, and was not sealed and insulated to modern standards.

Fogarty's Home Services was able to help this customer create a more comfortable and safe home. We removed the blown-in fiberglass using a large vacuum, ensuring that we got into every tight corner so we could remove all of it. We then got to work air-sealing the attic using our ZypFoam one-part spray foam. We installed baffles in the rafter bays, and marked each electrical component in the attic with flags for the convenience of the homeowners. We then insulated the home using our TruSoft™ blown in cellulose insulation. TruSoft™ insulation is made of 85% recycled material, and it fills all of the gaps and odd shaped voids that you may have in your attic. This home will now be comfortable for years to come!

Removing Attic Insulation in Pomfret Center, CT

This homeowner in Pomfret Center, CT called us when an energy evaluation on her home showed insufficient insulation in the attic. When we arrived, we noticed that her attic had batts of fiberglass insulation. The insulation was littered with bugs, dirt, and rodent feces -- not an ideal situation for a home, especially one where children or the elderly live. We spoke to the homeowner and she came to the conclusion that our TruSoft™ cellulose insulation was the best choice for her home. But before we could install that, we first had to see what was under all of that insulation.

The batts of insulation were bagged up into large trash bags. The stray pieces were then vacuumed out, alongside any remaining animal droppings and bugs. The insulation was then disposed of by Fogarty's Home Services.

Now, the attic is ready to be prepped, sealed, and insulated again! This removal is the first step to the lowered energy bills and comfortable home the customer was looking for.
