Coal

A fossil fuel in the form of a combustible black or brownish-black rock that contains a high proportion of carbonaceous material. Coal is formed from plant remains that have been compacted, hardened, chemically altered, and metamorphosed by heat and pressure over geologic time. Over 50% of the electricity generated in the U.S. comes from coal-fired power plants.
